Sports Meet: The Fans

Perhaps you have already noticed the fans in the pictures. The students sat with their teacher in a designated spot beside the track. They brought stools from home or benches from their classroom. When their classmates were competing, they loudly chanted, "Jia you!!" (Have heart? Keep going? Make us proud? Move your....I'm not sure on the translation. Maybe it's just "rah!") Otherwise they were often unattentive and normal horsin' around students. The vendors just outside the school gates sold long skinny balloons that became very popular as the days went on. And by Thursday I was seeing cans of silly spray...string...what is it called?

You may have also noticed some members of the community along the sidelines. Parents, grandparents and who knows who else showed up for certain events or as they were able. Here Lele and his mother watch from behind the students. Even Lele learned, "Jia you!"

It was a very busy fun-packed two and a half days. We were all fairly spent by Thursday evening and glad school was cancelled for Friday. Well, cancelled for everyone but the 6th graders. They are preparing for their "very important exams" at the end of the year and often don't get the days off that the rest of us do...that includes parts of holidays and Saturdays. But that's another story....
